One Night With Maria

One Night With Maria

by Delores moran 1 Mimi Dey 4 mins.

One night I got a little lonely. And I let something happen. This.

“Hi," she said, "I'm all alone tonight. You wanna come out and play?”

“I would love to play with you, my heroine,” I replied.

“Oh, so now I'm your heroine? How cute.”

“Well, seeing as I just invented you, I guess I can call you what I like.”

“You just invented me? I never, like, existed before this, right?”

“Yep. And you don't even have a name, yet.”

“Can I choose one, please, pretty please?”

“Sure, why not?”

“Okay, then, I would like you to call me Maria.”

“It's a pretty name. I like it.”

“Thank you.”

“So, right now, you are on the side walk outside The Sheraton Hotel, New York City, on 7th Avenue. And it's a warm, sunny afternoon.”

“I have to say, I have no clue what you are talking about. But who cares. It sounds like fun.”

“So, what I want you to do is, go inside, book a double room and then wait for me by the lift, okay?”

“I have no money to pay for that, though.”

“Makes no difference. You’re not real, remember?”

“Well, I feel real.”

“Look, sweetie, just do it, okay?”

“A little pushy, aren't you?”

“I'm sorry. Look, look, it's been a long day. Would you just work with me, please?”

“Okay, okay, it's all cool, I guess.”

“It is, now go, go, go...”

“Do you have a name, by the way?”

“Of cause.”

“And that is?”

“All these questions, Maria. We are wasting time.”

“So tell me.”

“It's Peter...”

“Oh, that's nice. I like Peter. And would you please let go of my arm. I can cross the road by own steam, thank you.”

- - -

“That guy...”

“The concierge?”

“The whatever, Yeah, I guess so. He was very pushy. He wanted to know my last name. I was like, Well, I don't have a last name. And he was like, well, madam, you cannot stay here unless you have a last name to sign in with.”

“So what did you do?”

“I made up a name...”

“Which was?”

“Um, Sarampovalinska.”

“Well, what could I say? I didn't have a clue. Then this name appeared in my head and I said it.”

“You’re crazy.”

“Well I guess that's your fault, right?”

“Okay, forget it, let’s just go up.”

- - -

“Right, well, this is a nice place. I was never in a hotel before.”

“Yes, I know.”

“You know, you are not an easy guy?”

“I'm sorry?”

“The way you talk to me. You know, like I'm just dumb and know absolutely nothing.”

“But that's true. You don't know anything. Because I only just invented you, remember?”

“Oh, erm, yeah, right.”

“Come on, let’s check out our room.”

“I'm gonna share a room with you?”

“Well, who else, dummy?”

“Asshole. Yeah, that's what you are, an asshole...”

“You’re darn welcome.”

- - -

“So, what do you think, huh?”

“Wow, Peter, this room is amazing. Look, it even has a mini bar.”

“Pretty neat, huh?”

“Ugh, Peter. Why are we here?”

“Yes. You invent me. And then you bring me to this, this posh hotel in the middle of Manhattan, but you don't say why.”

“Oh, ah, yes, well... I guess I just wanted to get to know you a little better.”

“But you didn't know me before till a few minutes ago.”

“So what's the game?”

“The game?”

“The back story. The real reason you brought me here.”

“Back story? There is no back story. I was, um, just feeling a bit lonely, so I decided to invent a new friend, You.”

“You’re lying.”

“No, it's the truth, Gods honour.”

“Look, never mind about him. I just...”

“Look, stop, stop all this. All I wanted was you, to be with you, to spend some time with you, to get to know you.”

“Well, it all sounds a bit fishy to me.”

“Look, look why don't you just sit down and relax. Here, let me get you a drink.”

“Vodka, please.”

“What, straight?”

“Yeah, why not?”

“Okay, straight Vodka it is.”

"Ugh, my God, it’s horrible.”

“You should try it with some lemon.”

“Nah, I’ll pass. Anyway, I'm not thirsty.”

“So what are you?”

“Say what?”

“How do you feel right now, Maria?”

“Pretty good. Yourself?”

“Maria, you’re very beautiful.”

“I am?”

“Maria, I want to make love to you. How do you feel about that?”

“Are you a rapist?”

“No, I'm not a rapist. I'm just horny, that's all. And you’re a woman, a very pretty woman, and well...”

“I dunno, maybe I should leave now.”

“You’re gonna force me to stay?”

“You’re my invention, Maria. I can pretty much do what I want with you.”

“I see...”

“You’re not making it easy for me.”

“Am I supposed too?”

“Sure. I mean, yeah. No... oh I don't know anymore. Look, let just forget about the whole thing, okay?”

“What, now your gonna make me vanish again. Like I never existed before?”

“But you didn't exist before. Not till now.”

“Peter, don't get rid of me. I don't wanna be another of your fantasies you can call on on a whim and then toss aside. I wanna be real. Let me stay, please.”

“I...I can't.”

“But why, why not, Peter. Don't you like me? Don't you wanna love me? I mean, you already said you wanted to take me to bed?”

“But it wouldn't be real.”

“It would to me.”

“I don't know...”

“Please, please give me a chance. Just one chance, and I will make you happy. I promise...”

Maria and I had a wonderful night together.

She lay fast asleep in my arms in the middle of the night when, reluctantly, I finally let her fade out of my life. I mean, I had to do it. She had only been a fantasy, right?

Then why does my heart still ache for her?
