St. Simeon the Elder
Did nothing but live for God
Choosing extreme austerity
A life-style we would think odd!
This ascetic Syrian saint
His perfectionism so extreme
Lived his life on a pillar
Thus fulfilling his new Christian dream.
A lofty station fifty feet high
Like a look-out man in a crows nest
Resisting the cold and the desert heat
Not even a bed upon which to rest.
History says that for thirty-seven years
In a stance of continual prayers
Simeon's light showed among men
Now removed from day-to-day cares.
"Show me a man that suffered more than I"
"One death, is that how martyrs die?"
Expired without descending the column in air
His body slumped, stooped over in prayer!
