I decide to chat a woman up in Bar Huddle. It's not my usual style. I'm really a shy type of man. But this day, I was on a mission, I guess. I was sick and tired of being on my own 24/7. I needed a change, and this was it. I hadn't been with a woman for a while. But I remembered what it was like, the smell of a woman's perfume, the feel of her soft skin against mine. I missed all that. Now I wanted it back. The question was, would I find a woman? And would she take me? I had my doubts. I reasoned to try. What harm could it do?
Early evening, Friday, and the place was fairly full, more men than women. Not unusual. Scanning the talent, I spotted a particularly fetching looking girl with long straight blonde hair and the kind of figure that men drool over, a blonde Venus. Nice. She was alone. Made me wonder, in passing, if she might be on the make. Who knows with women? Her clothes, what there was of them, displayed milky white skin that looked, at that moment, extremely kissable. Her face was round and pretty and her legs were long and shapely, ending in cream stilettos. I was interested.
But would I have the courage to make an approach? A tall order for me. I'm not exactly the conversationist's dream. Words don't come that easily to me, especialy where women are concerned. I tend to dry up. Anyway, the likelihood was she would reject me out of hand on sight. I wasn't exactly Mr Universe. Medium height, early forties, slightly overweight, thinning hair, plus two days stubble. Casually dressed, I was hardly the kind of man a gorgeous looking girl like her was going to want to spend her Friday night with.
Then, I thought, what have I got to lose trying? After fifteen minutes of watching her I took a deep breath, stood up and made my way to the bar, empty glass in hand, heading for a re fill. The bar area was crowded. For a moment there seemed no way I could get close to the girl. Just as I was about to give up a gap opened and I darted in, right up next to her. Wow, her perfume was intoxicating. I was hooked. She wasn't looking my way. But she wasn't with anybody. I was just getting served when she turned to look my way and smiled. "Hi there," she said in a sweet voice that made me tingle all over.
"Hi, you're self," I replied giving her my best smile back, wondering if that was going to be it. I reasoned, at least she spoke to me. More than I had expected for sure.
"Busy night," she said.
I was getting excited. I wanted to laugh.
"Yeah," I said, "Well it's always worse in here on Fridays."
She nodded, looking right at me through pretty brown eyes. She was a doll, and talking to me of all people. Was I dreaming?
"Can I get you a drink?" I heard myself say.
"Oh, thanks," she said, "I'll have a glass of white wine, please, if it's not too much trouble?"
"No problem," I assured her, feeling a warm glow inside.
"So, you come here a lot, then?" she asked as I got her drink.
"Two or three times a week. I've not seen you in here before, though."
"Yeah, it's my first time."
"Welcome to Bar Huddle," I said grinning.
We laughed at the crazy name for the place.
"Have you got a place to sit?" she asked.
I nodded, indicating a table near the back. "You won't mind if I join you, then?" she said.
I nearly dropped my drink. "Erm, not at all," I said thinking this can't be true. I had a job suppressing a hysterical laugh.
I knew that more than one man was giving her the eye as we made it through the masses to my table. She was a real looker. I felt kind of smug knowing she was with me.
She sat next to me rather than opposite, which was another surprise.
"You married, then?" she asked.
"Once," I replied not really wanting go that way.
"You?" I said
"Nah," she said with a laugh, "Been engaged twice, though."
I nodded, not surprised.
"Bloody men," she said, a serious look on her face now.
"Um. but present company excepted, of cause," she said blushing.
"Ah, no worries," I said, "I know what you mean. Men can be funny sometimes."
"Yeah, hysterical," she said unsmiling.
Suddenly she pointed out a big handsome man standing with a bunch of others. "See him?" she said.
"He's been trying to get his hands in my panties for months. Works at our place. Thinks he's God's gift."
I didn't know what to say. But I knew what I was thinking as I gazed at the smarmy bum. He didn't deserve her.
"Do you know?" she said, he pulled me into the gents one day at work. Told me he wanted to do things to me."
"And did he?" I said, wondering where this conversation was going.
"I slapped his face," she said, "and told him to sod off or ide tell the boss what he was up too."
"You wouldn't dare," he said. I said, "Just you try me, matey." Then I shoved him out the way and ran out."
"So, did you tell?" I asked.
"Nah," she said, "But if he'd touched me one more time I would've for sure."
I nodded and finished my drink. "Fancy another?" I asked, seeing as her glass was empty too.
"No thanks, I've had enough, "she said, "Come on, let's get out of here."
I wanted to laugh. "Yeah, right."
Heading out; she caught hold of my arm and started pulling me in the direction of that big man and his mates. We stopped in front of them. They were chatting, having a laugh about something. Suddenly they went quiet. She stuck her finger right in that big man's belly and said so everybody in the place could hear it, "Hey, this is my boyfriend," referring to me. The man looked at her in surprise, then at me with ferocious intent in his eyes. I went cold. But before anything could happen she dragged me away and we were outside. I was glad to get away because I had no desire to get beaten up by that big man. The night air was warm and clear and I took several deep breaths to settle myself down again.
For a while we walked together through the mostly deserted streets. It was a lovely night with a gleaming half-moon in the starry sky. "You live near?" she said after a while. A rush of excitement shot through me at the thought of what that question might lead too. I told her I lived not far.
"I'm on the other side of town," she said, "Need to catch that last bus."
"Ah, right you are," I said, half relieved half disappointed that she wouldn't be coming home with me.
We got to the bus terminus just as her bus was pulling in. "Timing, eh?" she said with a lovely smile that made me feel all funny inside. She still had hold of my arm as we stood just beside the door of the waiting bus. Moving up close, she said, "It's been a lovely night. Thanks."
"Ah, no worries," I said, "You take care, now."
"Thank you, I will," she said. And for a moment our eyes met and I felt my heart pound.
"Well, goodnight," she said turning away.
Then just as she was about to get on the bus she turned back and gave me a quick kiss on the lips, smiled and was gone.
The kiss caught me off guard. I hadn't expected it. And I had mixed emotions inside. I didn't even know her name. As the bus pulled away I had a sudden urge to run after it, but thought better of making a fool of myself in public.
Instead I turned away and headed off home. On the way I noticed the big man from the pub and his mates heading in my direction. And I darted down a dark alley till they had passed. I was in no mood for a fight.
All the way home I kept thinking about the blonde Venus, the way she was, and the night ide had with her and the unexpectedness of it all. Actually I was pretty proud of myself, the way I had handled it all. It had gone just like a dream.
